Human-centred interaction with medical data and responsible integration of AI

In this research area, the focus is on designing, developing, and evaluating interactive systems for medical data, alongside the responsible integration of AI. It aims to support healthcare professionals across diagnosis, treatment, and patient communication through intuitive interfaces for mobile and immersive technologies. Additionally, it explores natural interaction techniques and ensures that AI systems are transparent, controllable, and aligned with clinical needs, preserving human expertise while enhancing decision-making.

Digital collaboration and telemedical care across distances

We research and develop telemedicine technologies that enable effective medical collaboration across distances, including remote treatment and consultation. Thereby, we investigate how synchronous and asynchronous teamwork, supported by appropriate information and interaction design – including nonverbal signals – can ensure reliable clinical decision-making. At the same time, it advances accessible, user-centred telemedical systems that strengthen doctor–patient interaction and provide high-quality healthcare regardless of location or resources.

Digital health education and empowerment of students and patients

How can digital technologies support patients and future healthcare professionals in building medical knowledge and practical skills? This research area focuses on interactive learning environments, multimodal feedback, and insights from game-based research to improve engagement and effectiveness. The goal is to empower patients with accessible health information and decision support, while better preparing medical students and young doctors through simulation-based training and modern educational tools.
